Learning guitar fast is possible! I should know… even though I’m a Berklee College of Music graduate, I did not study guitar at Berklee (I studied music production and engineering and vocal performance). However, I taught myself guitar before I ever went to music school through the use of books to the point where I can accompany myself and write songs on guitar. Hey, I even played guitar on my cd, and have lead worship at church! So I’m a living example of learning how to play a guitar without expensive guitar lessons. Today, there are so many different methods for learning guitar, where do you start? I’ve done the research for you and have come up with what in my opinion are the best methods to teach yourself guitar today, and start living your rock star dreams!

Jamplay is by far my top pick for learning to play the guitar. This program highly impressed me when I saw it, and it’s hitting it big in the guitar world. Their website is a membership only service which broadcasts high-definition video guitar lessons. They have combined guitar instruction with interactivity… even allowing you to ask questions to their video instructors. As of this writing, they have over 19,200 + minutes of lessons in just about every style of guitar playing imaginable for both acoustic and electric guitars.
They feature 4-5 guitar instructors for each section to give you a selection in teaching methods, which is a big plus. They teach by "lesson set" instead of just flopping out a ton of small video clips. They start with the very basics like tuning your guitar, finger placement, and basic chords, and move on to finger-picking, palm muting, hammer ons, pull offs, and many more advanced topics as you progress through the lessons. I found this surprisingly good for the overall experience, because you can follow through these lesson sets just how you would with a normal guitar teacher.
Biggest thing is, it’s cheap as well because they get so many members. Would you believe it’s only $19.95 / month? You can get it even cheaper if you pay several months in advance. The only downside that I see to Jamplay is that because there are so many lessons to choose from… where do you start? It can seem overwhelming. But they have tutorial videos with suggestions on how & where to get started. So if you have the drive to start playing guitar, I highly recommend checking out Jamplay. Short of private guitar instruction (which is quite expensive), this is the best, most comprehensive system for learning the guitar fast.

Jamorama
Jamorama is my second choice for learning the guitar. Unlike the monthly membership site in Jamplay, this is a one time charge program. Learn to play guitar with Jamorama is a collection of downloadable ebooks, games and video/audio files that comes with membership and a required fee. The ebooks include detailed and in-depth pictures and exercises with icons that lets you know if there is an audio or video recording that goes along with that particular lesson. The well-designed games cover chord identification, sight-reading and pitch recognition. Jamorama lacks an animated fretboard, the ability to record performance, repetition looping, performance feedback and music tracking. Jamorama only offers email support for customer inquiries, but they are quick to respond and helpful. I found the Jamorama program to include amusing, fun, and entertaining games and lessons for the beginning player, but lacking in advanced features for musicians that may want to record their own arrangements.
